Portrait of a Child Holding a Drawing

By Giovanni Caroto, ca 1515. I love this. It shows that children's drawings 500 years ago were not too different than children's drawings now, and gives the picture a touch of the completely contemporary. Not that it's a child's drawing in the picture. It's a painting of a child's drawing which is a completely different thing altogether.

Read about it in The Independent's Great Works.
